Christmas comes early for light fingered residence hall thieves!

If you are about to start university, read the article “Freshers – easy targets for thieves”, it will bring home the fact there is more to getting a degree than the nightly ‘happy hour’ at the student union!

The average student setting off for university for the 2008/2009 in-take will take with them goods to the value of £1500. After packing up all your latest buys and those gadgets you just can’t live without, there is one more thing you need to sort out before you go and it won’t take up any extra space… some insurance cover!

Over fifty per cent of new students will carry with them their laptop or computer, their mobile phone, TV, games console and DVD players. Other popular items moved from home to the ‘fresher’s’ new digs include MP3 players, iPods, USB/memory sticks, designer clothing, jewellery and musical instruments.

Regionally, the value of items taken to university by new students varies. The students with goods of the most value are those from towns and cities in the South East, while students hailing from Scotland have the lower value of personal ‘must have’ items. Northern students tend to have more valuable fashion items than other students while students from Wales on average take the most jewellery with them. But whether you have plenty to lose or just a little, the pain of theft doesn’t hurt as much when you have insurance!
