Spine surgery is often non-invasive
The newest techniques of spine surgery are a lot less invasive than traditional ways. They can also be faster healing and do less damage to healthy tissue around the spine. There are spine surgeries today which can be performed with small incisions only. This in itself is a big leap forward. For one thing it leaves behind few marks of the event. (I know in my own case, when operated on for a bowel problem, this "keyhole" surgery has left almost no marks on my abdomen.) Using new, non-invasive techniques a patient can be given only local anesthesia, which will permit him to remain alert during the work and able to communicate with the surgeon. One branch of this, the so-called "Bonati Procedures" are relatively gentle and can relieve pain that traditional techniques were not able to alleviate. Around 20,000 operations using these techniques have been performed. So, spine surgery need not be as heavy-handed and invasive as it often was in the past.
